The NIOO possesses an IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer) to which two GCs (Gas Chromatographs) are coupled. One GC is primarily used for the separation of esterified fatty acids in soil extracts (PLFAs) and the other GC is used for the separation of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) in gas samples. The IRMS is frequently maintained and is in good condition and, despite its age, can still be used for years, but the GCs need replacement.
