Universiteit Leiden wishes to implement a new Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) that supports all research institutes and researchers. Currently, some groups use a PerkinElmer E-Notebook 2014, while others use simple digital solutions or paper. The new ELN must be fully integrated with external storage and data management systems, ensuring the integrity of links between the ELN and external data is maintained, even in the event of changes to physical storage locations or URLs. Additionally, the system must comply with Dutch laws and regulations, including GDPR, and provide user-friendly functionalities, scalability, training, and support. The goal is a uniform, digital workflow for all research activities, with a robust connection to external data storage and maximum assurance of data integrity.

In the current situation, a portion of the research groups within the institutes works with an ELN application implemented in 2016 (E-Notebook 2014 by PerkinElmer Informatics). In addition, other (simple) digital solutions and paper lab notebooks are also being used. In these cases, research data is mostly stored digitally on the university network, local hard drives, or external storage media. In the desired situation, all research groups and all researchers of the institutes will work with a new ELN solution that is linked to ELN-external storage and data management solutions.
